When your cruise goes wrong, what can you do?

As exhausted passengers were disembarking their disabled cruise ship on Valentine’s Day, many people thinking about booking a cruise of their own this year are thinking, “What if that had been my vacation”?

February is the time most people start to think about and book their vacations on cruises. While images of long hours on the lido deck, sumptuous buffets every night and conga lines in the disco may be part of your dream trip, remembering your safety and preparing for the unexpected may create a more stress free cruise experience.

Just a year ago, the cruise ship Concordia ran aground in Italy. Who could have foreseen such a disaster? Then the recent news about the Carnival Cruise Triumph, and incidents of Norovirus ruining vacations for cruise ship passengers around the world this winter.

Expect the Unexpected
Travel insurance covers the unexpected. From illness, injury, trip interruption, to lost luggage, security evacuation and more, obtaining insurance is a smart move, especially if you are traveling internationally.  If you suddenly fall ill or become seriously injured and need emergency medical evacuation back to North America, you can easily find yourself spending $50,000 or more, warns the U.S. Department of State.

“People plan their entire lives to take a cruise,” says Daryl Trawick , President of Trawick International, a leading trip insurance provider. “They can spend over $20,000 on a dream cruise vacation and jeopardize losing it by not obtaining international travel insurance. For the percentage of what it costs to purchase a policy, it’s more than worth it for peace of mind. As those of us in the industry know, you should only insure what you can’t afford to lose.”
Another benefit to international trip insurance is if something impacts the entire ship, like the Concordia accident or other mishaps like severe weather or mechanical failure.

Having trip insurance can cover your losses and make you whole.
“When shopping for trip insurance plans, be sure to review what is covered and how much coverage you will get in case an emergency arises,” Trawick explained.

Trawick International provides high-quality, affordable international health insurance programs for people traveling to the USA and people traveling abroad. Carnival Triumph Adrift of Mexico Coast after fire

The Coast Guard says it is maintaining communication with a Carnival cruise ship that is adrift off of Mexico after a fire in an engine room.

The Coast Guard said in a news release personnel aboard the Carnival Triumph extinguished the fire and no one was injured. The ship is now operating on emergency power about 150 miles off southern Mexico’s Yucatan peninsula.

Tug boats have been dispatched to assist the ship and it is receiving supplies from another cruise ship. The Coast Guard has also dispatched a ship to assist if necessary.

In January last year, the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise ship operated by the Carnival Corp-owned Costa Cruises, capsized and sank off the Tuscan island of Giglio in Italy, killing 32 people. Italian investigators are looking into the vessel owner’s potential responsibility for the shipwreck.

The Carnival Triumph set sail from Galveston, Texas, on Thursday, and was due back on Monday Feb. 11. Carnival said all passengers would receive a refund and “cruise credit equal to the amount paid for this voyage.’’

The ship’s next two voyages, scheduled for departure next week, were canceled, the company added.

Can you trust the port talks on cruise ships?

Should you believe everything you're told by port lecturers on cruise ships? The question is in the spotlight this week in the wake of a legal settlement between the state of Alaska and three companies that provide lecturers for cruise lines.

Florida-based Onboard Media, Royal Media Partners and PPI Group on Monday agreed to have their on-board lecturers clearly disclose to passengers that they are being paid to tout specific stores in port talks. The companies also agreed that their lecturers wouldn't disparage stores that refuse to pay to be mentioned in onboard presentations.

Under terms of the settlement, port lecturers are not allowed to say or suggest that stores that aren't paying them are "risky" or "unsafe."

The agreement also requires port lecturers to read the following script at the start of every talk: "My name is (name goes here) and I am your Port Lecturer [or other title]. The retailers you hear about in today's presentation have paid a fee to be included in the shopping program, and many of the retailers also pay commissions that are based on their sales to passengers."

The settlement sets up a mechanism by which the state can monitor whether port lecturers are following such rules. For the upcoming 2013 cruise season in Alaska, the three companies will be required to collect video and audio recordings of all onboard port talks for analysis by the state's attorney general. Companies that don't follow the rules will be subject to fines of up to $50,000 per violation.

The settlement also requires the companies to pay more than $200,000 to the state of Alaska but includes no admission of wrongdoing.

In a statement sent to USA TODAY, Onboard Media's vice president, Noelle Sipos, says the settlement simply formalizes policies that it always has followed.

"Onboard Media has been at the forefront of creating and managing business practices that comply with both the spirit and letter of the (Alaska Consumer Protection Act)," Sipos says. "We are pleased that the standards that Onboard Media has always followed have now been formalized in this agreement. Onboard Media is committed to complying with all the rules and regulations, and upholding high ethical standards as the foundation of our business practices."

PPI Group issued a press release that said the company was pleased with the agreement and looking forward to demonstrating its commitment to fulfilling all of the expectations noted in the agreement.

"We hold the integrity of our program at a very high level," PPI Group CEO Bill Panoff says in the press release. "Striving for excellence is what we do, and we intend to remove any ambiguity out of the equation, ensuring that all Alaska retailers, whether participating or not, feel confident about the upcoming season."

A representative for Royal Media Partners could not immediately be reached for comment.

Themed Cruise Ideas

Wine Cruise
In 2014, Viking River Cruises is adding a new itinerary, Chateaux, Rivers & Wine, allowing guests to experience not only the history and culture of the Bordeaux region, but also to taste the wines of the region and learn how to make pastries, such as caneles.

“Our itineraries in France have always been very popular, and we are pleased to introduce this unique new experience in the Bordeaux region,” says Torstein Hagen, chairman of Viking River Cruises. “We have designed an itinerary that allows our guests to explore this historically fascinating region and enjoy some of the world’s most celebrated wines.”

The 8-day voyage includes six guided tours in the Bordeaux and Aquitaine region, such as a tour of the citadel of Blaye or the town of St. Emilion, both UNESCO World Heritage sites, or a visit to the sites in Bordeaux. Passengers can also learn more about the culture of the region from local experts, such as a master sommelier.

Festival Cruise
Country music fans can also rejoice with a cruise to a private island in the Bahamas to celebrate the band Alabama’s 40th anniversary of their first show at The Bowery in New York City. The 4-night cruise departs Oct. 24 on NCL’s Norwegian Pearl departing from Miami to Nassau and stopping at Great Stirrup Cay, Norwegian’s private island.

The band will perform two outdoor concerts, and each member will have an individual performance. In addition, Alabama will be hosting a variety of other performances and activities on board. Guests will also receive an autographed cruise poster per stateroom, and can take a photo with the band.

“We have some exciting things in store for the fans and look forward to making this a lifetime memory for everyone on board,” says Teddy Gentry, founding member of Alabama. “This will be a one-of-a-kind experience where we truly get to share time together with our biggest supporters over the years.”

Staterooms go on sale March 20, and rates start at $750 pp. Rates include entertainment, meals, and access to the ship’s amenities, which include the fitness center, two pools, hot tubs and a rock climbing wall.

Jazz Cruise
On Crystal Cruises’ April 29 voyage, guests can enjoy a 7-day jazz-themed trip on Crystal Symphony from Vancouver to Los Angeles. The Experiences of Discovery itinerary will stop at ports in Victoria, BC; Seattle, WA; Astoria, OR; San Francisco and Santa Barbara. On board, guests can listen to nightly performances in the lounges and theaters by a dozen jazz artists performing with and paying tribute to Benny Golson, a saxophonist, composer and arranger. Some of the performers include pianist Kenny Barron and his trio; guitarist Henry Johnson; and the Don Braden Quartet.

“To hear some of the best-known jazz compositions from the man who made many of them famous, along with this collection of great modern musicians on one voyage, is not only an honor for us, but truly an exclusive, Crystal-caliber treat for our guests,” says Bret Bullock, v.p. of entertainment for Crystal Cruises.

In September, Crystal Cruises will lead another jazz cruise with about two dozen musicians on a French-Canadian trip departing from Montreal on Sept. 26, featuring musicians such as Eddie Metz and Antti Sarpila. The trip will feature stops in Sept-Iles, Magdalen Island, and Quebec City, Quebec.

Royal Caribbean's next cruiseship underway

Construction officially has begun on Royal Caribbean's next generation of cruise ships.

Royal Caribbean says the first piece of steel for the first of its two Project Sunshine vessels was cut this week at a shipyard in Germany. The line also announced that the ships would be called Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas.

Scheduled to debut in fall 2014 and spring 2015, respectively, the two vessels will be part of what the line is now calling the Quantum class.

"After three years of design and advance planning, this is the first step of the construction of the ship, and I look forward to seeing it all come together in the coming months," Royal Caribbean CEO Adam Goldstein says in a statement. "The new ship will be such a leap forward in terms of vessel design and guest experiences that we thought the name Quantum of the Seas was perfectly appropriate."

At 158,000 tons, the new Quantum class ships will be significantly smaller than the line's last two vessels, the much-ballyhooed Oasis of the Seas and Allure of the Seas. At 225,282 tons, the two Oasis class ships set a new record for cruise ship size when they debuted in 2009 and 2010, respectively.

While the Oasis class ships have been a notable success, commanding premium pricing, Royal Caribbean executives have said the line needs a mix of different size ships to allow for flexibility in itinerary planning. Royal Caribbean currently operates 22 vessels spread among six classes that range in size from about 69,000 tons to 225,282 tons.

Royal Caribbean says the new Quantum class vessels will carry about 4,100 passengers at double occupancy, but the line otherwise has released few details about the ships. They're being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany.
