Thomson celebration ends record year for Portsmouth, UK

With more cruise holidays on offer every year, and with constantly changing ships and itineraries, travel agents have to stay ahead of the game in a competitive market.

That’s why a dozen holiday consultants, keen to expand their knowledge, will be at Portsmouth International Port this Monday. The group will be learning about the Port, looking at one of its biggest ever visitors, and discovering why the waterfront city makes a great destination for holidaymakers.

It’s sure to be a busy morning, with Thomson’s Celebration arriving for the first time in Portsmouth. Celebration will bring the biggest number of passengers to ever have disembarked from a single cruise ship at Portsmouth International Port.  The visiting agents will be taken to the quayside to get a closer look at the luxury liner. They’ll also get to learn what makes the award winning terminal so special, before heading off to visit the new Mary Rose exhibition at the Historic Dockyard.

2013 has been a year to remember at Britain’s Best Connected cruise and ferry Port, with more cruise ships coming and going than at any other point in its history. But the team looking after visiting cruise ships won’t get a well earned rest until more than eleven hundred passengers, and in excess of two thousand bags, are brought through the dedicated cruise and ferry terminal on Monday.

The arrival of Thomson’s luxury liner is a fitting end to the year, and a demonstration of how investment in new ship and passenger facilities has boosted business at the Port. Thomson Celebration is 215 metres long and will use the recently extended Berth 2 to safely dock and disembark passengers. The enlarged turning circle,  created at the entrance of the Port by moving the Royal Navy training ship HMS Bristol, will also make for an easy and efficient arrival and departure.

CONTINUES BELOW

Thomson is a new customer at the Port, the well known travel company recognising how convenient Portsmouth is for its passengers. Situated on the UK motorway network and with good links to airports and rail transport too, arriving passengers can easily get home wherever they live in the country.

The much loved cruise ship will be almost full, bringing its happy passengers back to the UK after a Mediterranean holiday that started in Marmaris in Turkey at the end of October. Celebration is part of Thomson’s platinum range of cruise ships. Its focus on sophisticated dining and indulgent spa facilities make it a firm favourite with passengers. Before arriving in Portsmouth they will have enjoyed three days at sea enjoying the high quality food and facilities onboard, having left Lisbon in Portugal on November 8th.

Celebration is due to arrive early in the morning, with passengers due to get off between 0730 and 0930. Harbour Master Captain Rupert Taylor will be on hand to make sure all goes smoothly, and will present the Captain of Celebration with a commemorative plaque to mark the vessel’s first visit to Portsmouth International Port. The ship is then due to leave for Hamburg where it will undergo routine checks.

Despite the record number of passengers disembarking, Celebration isn’t quite the largest cruise ship to have visited Portsmouth International Port this year. That honour goes to the German liner Artania. Measuring 231 metres it is the longest commercial vessel to have ever docked at Portsmouth, and visited twice during 2013 bringing hundreds of passengers to visit the local area. Having enjoyed her experience in Portsmouth 2013, she has already booked another call in 2014.

Norwegian Cruise Line renews Nintendo deal

Norwegian Cruise Line and Nintendo of America have announced that they are expanding their partnership to offer Wii U video game systems and Wii U games fleet wide.

As part of the partnership expansion, the line will feature Nintendo’s newest video game console in all ships’ atriums and youth and teen centres.

In addition, the new HD Wii U systems will be featured at various competitions and events on board each ship.

Norwegian first partnered with Nintendo in March 2007, when Wii systems were introduced fleet wide. Now, with the introduction of Wii U, the successor to Wii, the gaming experience is being elevated to new levels.

The interactive Wii U gaming system complements Norwegian’s Freestyle Cruising by offering gaming opportunities to guests of all ages.

The new consoles give guests the chance to experience a variety of new action, adventure, party, racing, strategy, puzzle and sports games.

Upcoming game rollouts will include The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, a high-definition re-release of one of the greatest Nintendo games of all time; Super Mario 3D World, the first multiplayer 3D Mario game for Wii U; New Super Luigi U, starring Mario’s green-clad brother; Pikmin 3, which asks players to command an army of colourful creatures; and The Wonderful 101, which puts players in control of a band of superheroes fighting off an alien invasion.

Wii U delivers great video game experiences with exclusive Nintendo characters in HD.

Wii U also features the GamePad controller, which removes the traditional barriers between players, their favourite games and the television by giving one player a second touch screen, while other players use traditional controllers.

It’s perfect for the kinds of multiplayer game-playing parties found on board cruise ships.

Dutch firm wins $30M contract to move Concordia

Dockwise, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Royal Boskalis Westminster, has been awarded the contract to load and transport the Concordia wreck from Isola del Giglio onboard the Dockwise Vanguard.

The contract was awarded by Costa Crociere.

Following the successful parbuckling of the Concordia, and in anticipation of the pending re-float, Dockwise and the client have been in discussion to seek a safe solution to remove the Concordia wreck from Isola del Giglio in Italy.

In a unique operation the Concordia can be loaded as a whole onto the Dockwise Vanguard and safely transported to a location where she can be scrapped.

The client has yet to make a decision in agreement with the local authorities on the final destination.

Alternatives under review include scrapping the vessel in Italy.

As part of the contract, certain modifications will be made to the Dockwise Vanguard to accommodate the loading of the Concordia in her current state.

The operation is planned to take place around mid-2014 and contract value of the work scope as described amounts to approximately US$30 million.

The Dockwise Vanguard is the world’s largest semi-submersible ship uniquely positioned to lift and transport extremely heavy cargoes in a dry and safe manner.

The ship was initially designed to transport offshore oil and gas structures, but can also carry other vessels and act as an offshore dry dock facility.

The Dockwise Vanguard has an open and flat stern and bow-less deck measuring 275 meters by 70 meters allowing the vessel to transport cargo longer and wider than the deck dimensions.

When the ballast tanks are flooded, the ship deck submerges below the surface, allowing her to handle deep draught cargoes.

Once the Dockwise Vanguard is semi-submersed, the floating Concordia will be brought in position above the deck and as the ballast tanks are emptied, the entire ship including the Concordia is brought above the water line allowing her to transport the cargo in a safe and swift manner.

Boskalis, through its wholly-owned subsidiary SMIT Salvage, also provided emergency response services in the first months following the Concordia accident.

SMIT Salvage, together with its local partner Tito Neri, successfully removed the bunker fuel from the ship and acted as caretaker from mid-January through to mid-March in 2012.

Boskalis views this project as strategically important demonstrating the opportunities for combining maritime services and assets across the breadth of the company.

Furthermore, the use of the Dockwise Vanguard for this extreme salvage operation shows the versatility of the vessel.

The recently announced transportation of a FPSO, a recent successful dry docking operation and this salvage transport contract award demonstrate the potential of the vessel.

Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific expecting significant rise in attendance

15 1 Share4 days ago

UBM, owners and organizers of the Cruise Shipping Asia-Pacific conference and exhibition, anticipate a strong increase in attendance at the third edition of the event, set to open Wednesday, October 9.

While cruising is still quite a new concept within the Asia-Pacific market, organizers are already seeing a nearly 20 percent increase over last year’s attendance, based on pre-registration numbers alone. Given that 2012 numbers nearly doubled via on-site registration, total attendance may potentially reach 40 percent higher than previous years at the close of the show on Thursday, October 10th.

Additionally, the size of the trade show floor has increased significantly as well. Exhibitors from all over the world, interested in trading in the Asia-Pacific cruise market have purchased nearly 20 percent more exhibit stand space than the 2012 event.

“The uptick in attendance and exhibit space this year truly mirrors the ongoing growth and expansion of the cruise industry in the Pan-Asia market,” said Daniel Read, Portfolio Director of UBM’s Cruise Portfolio. “The opportunity the cruise lines bring to this market is unprecedented, especially when you take into account passenger sourcing for worldwide destinations and the shipbuilding and repair sector.”

Those elements and others will be thoroughly covered during the conference, which begins with the State of the Cruise Industry in Asia plenary session on Wednesday, October 9 at 10:00am.  Relevant concurrent sessions will follow in the afternoon and the following day.

CONTINUES BELOW

The exhibition officially opens Wednesday morning at 9:30 a.m. and closes Thursday afternoon at 5 p.m. In addition, a tribute to former Asia cruise industry pioneer Rama Rebbapragada will take place when an award is given in his name to an elite contributor to the growth of the Asian cruise market, Wednesday evening during the Welcome Reception.  The Rama Rebbapragada Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Cruise Industry in Asia, will be presented by Celebrity Cruises President and CEO, Michael Bayley.

American Cruise Lines gears up for busy 2014 Season

With advance bookings already ahead of the previous year, the line is preparing for an exciting year ahead, with new itineraries and plans to operate more cruises than it ever has before.

In the American Heartland, American Cruise Lines has added a new itinerary on the mighty Mississippi River. New for 2014, the line’s authentic paddlewheeler Queen of the Mississippi will be operating new St. Louis to New Orleans cruises. This new itinerary allows guests to experience a greater portion of the Mississippi River, by sailing through six states, in only eight days. Concordia captain blames helmsman

Francesco Schettino, captain of the Costa Concordia, which sank off Italy in 2012, has blamed his Indonesian helmsman for the accident.

Schettino claims the helmsman failed to obey orders to slow down and steered the ship onto rocks.

The captain is presently fighting charges of causing the shipwreck and abandoning ship.

Thirty-two people died when the cruise ship capsized in January 2012.

Helmsman Jacob Rusli Bin has already been convicted of manslaughter in a separate trial.

He was one of five Costa employees who were granted plea bargains in return for mild sentences in a separate proceeding.

He was given a sentence of one year and eight months.

Investigators have said previously language problems between the captain and the helmsman might have played a role in crash.

Schettino claimed if the helmsman had quickly executed the correct manoeuvre, the Concordia would have steered away from the jagged reef that sliced a hole in its side.

Costa Concordia re-floated off Tuscany

Italian engineers have successfully re-floated the Costa Concordia cruise ship which ran aground off the Tuscan coast in 2012.

Following a delay for poor weather, the ship was detached from rocks and moved on to a platform constructed on the sea bed.

Thirty-two people died when the cruise ship ran aground off the Tuscan coast.

Two bodies are yet to be recovered, with hopes they may be discovered during the latest phase of the operation to remove the ship.

The Italian Civil Protection Authority said only after the 114,000 tonne vessel - which capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January 2012 - is back up on her keel will it be possible to inspect it fully and begin to plan how to repair and re-float it.

The ship will eventually be towed away to be destroyed.

Five people have already been convicted of manslaughter over the disaster, and the ship’s captain, Francesco Schettino, is currently on trial accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship.

Costa Cruises captain awarded a high civil decoration for rescuing two fishermen

special civil merit’ to Costa Voyager Captain, Giovanni Cosini, for rescuing two young Albanian fishermen who had been drifting off the coast of Durres for two days.

The medal is the highest civil decoration in Albania and was presented at the Presidential Palace of Tirana during a ceremony which was also attended by the Italian Ambassador to Albania, Massimo Gaiani.

The two young fishermen were rescued on 30 March 2013 at 7am. While Costa Voyager was heading to Durres for its first call in the Albanian city, the crew on the ship’s bridge spotted the small fishing boat that had lost power and was drifting about 15 miles off the Albanian coast.

The two young men on the boat, reportedly in very poor condition, were rescued and assisted by the Costa Voyager crew. The ship’s captain notified the Albanian Coast Guard which confirmed that the two fishermen were missing and that they had been looking for them for two days. After the rescue, Costa Voyager called in the port of Durres where the fishermen disembarked and were reunited with their families.

Costa Voyager had been on a 10-day cruise, dedicated exclusively to the French market, having departed from Marseilles on 27 March with calls to Corigliano Calabro, Durres, Korcula (Croatia), Dubrovnik (Croatia), Zara (Croatia) and Messina.
