On March 31st 2013, Costa Cruises will celebrate its 65th anniversary.

It will be 65 years to the day since the first departure of the Anna C which left Genoa for Buenos Aires carrying 768 passengers.

She was the first ship in the Costa fleet dedicated to passenger transport, effectively marking the beginning of Costa’s cruises.

This is a major milestone for the company and for the global cruise industry which Costa is marking with a series of special initiatives starting on March 31st 2013 and continuing throughout the year.

The 65th anniversary will be celebrated in style around the world on all 14 ships in the fleet, in the Mediterranean, Asia, the Caribbean, South America, the Emirates and Oman.

On board there will be a string of special 65th anniversary events and activities arranged for guests including cocktail parties, special shows, gala dinners, as well as commemorative postcards and souvenir photos.

Some of the ports where Costa’s ships will be calling that day, from Buenos Aires to Shanghai, will be decked out with festive anniversary decorations and celebrations will also involve all the company’s employees, its partner organisations and the local community in Genoa where Costa is headquartered.

To further mark the occasion, the company is offering past clients and new clients alike unique opportunities to go on a Costa cruise with special anniversary offers.

Costa is also running a major international advertising campaign, mainly in the press, featuring a slogan stressing the close ties that have linked the company to its clients for 65 years:

Carnival Triumph will miss ten further voyages

Carnival Cruise Lines has announced the first implementation phase of its fleet wide comprehensive operational review, focused on Carnival Triumph, as well as Carnival Sunshine, which is currently undergoing a previously scheduled dry dock for product enhancements.

The cruise line is making significant investments to enhance the level of operating redundancies and the scope of hotel services that can run on emergency power, and further improve each ship’s fire prevention, detection and suppression systems.

Guests on the affected voyages will receive a full refund, reimbursement for non-refundable transportation costs and a 25 per cent discount on a future four- to five-day cruise.

Carnival Sunshine, which is currently undergoing a multi-week dry dock to complete a comprehensive full-ship makeover, will now enter service May 5th, 2013, following the cancellation of two European cruises.

Guests on the cancelled Carnival Sunshine voyages will receive a full refund, plus reimbursement for any non-refundable travel costs.

Additionally, they will receive a 25 per cent discount on a future cruise.

The additional time out of service will allow for implementation of the enhanced operating redundancies and other measures.

New private car excursions with Crystal Cruises in 2013

Due to guest demand, beginning this spring, Crystal Cruises’ luxury travelers have a new and flexible private option for exploring Europe: their own car and driver, with local, English-speaking guide.  The new private car or van offerings allow singles, couples and small groups (8 maximum) to fully customise time ashore upon arrival.  While Crystal is launching the program in 50 European ports on Crystal Symphony Mediterranean cruises and Crystal Serenity Northern European cruises, the ultra-luxury line plans to extend the program to other destinations later in the year.

“Many of today’s luxury guests like to explore on their own, but don’t enjoy the hassle, time and questionable quality of searching for transportation and guides, as well as the aggravation of negotiating fees,” says John Stoll , vice president, land and port operations.  “With our trusted transportation and destination expertise at their disposal, and by using fully licensed and insured companies, guests can tour independently with ease and safety, as well as be ultra-flexible should they want to follow a last-minute insider’s suggestion or just see how they feel in the moment.”

The program is the newest addition to a rapidly-expanding roster of Crystal Adventures shore excursion choices, including:

The cruise line bar staff will be trained by experts in the most progressive cocktail trends and pitted against each other in a series of hotly-contested heats.

A cruise line finalist will then go forward to take part in the World Class Bartender of the Year final, competing alongside bar tenders from the four corners of the globe.

Carnival Dream stranded in Caribbean

Passengers on the Carnival Dream have been stranded in the Caribbean after the ship developed equipment problems.

The incident comes just a month after passengers were stranded for four days in the Gulf of Mexico on board the Carnival Triumph in what some described as toxic conditions.

Several passengers aboard the Carnival Dream, which is currently docked in Philipsburg, St Maarten in the Caribbean talked of human waste all over the floor in some bathrooms, as well as power outages.

According to a statement from the cruise line, Carnival Dream developed a technical issue with the ship’s backup emergency diesel generator.

Second Carnival ship hit by technical problems

Things are going from bad to worse for Carnival, with news another of its ships is returning to port with technical problems.

Carnival Legend is returning to the port of Tampa after experiencing a technical issue with one of its Azipod, affecting the vessel’s sailing speed.

The ship’s safety systems and hotel services are all functioning normally, Carnival said in a statement.

Another Carnival cruise, the Dream, which is docked in St Maarten was forced to fly passengers home on
Thursday after the ship experienced overflowing toilets and power outages.

It comes just a month after sister ship, Carnival Triumph, was stranded for five days in the Gulf of Mexico.

The latest stranded vessel, the Legend, made its scheduled call yesterday in Mahogany Bay, Roatan, in addition to visiting Cozumel and Costa Maya earlier in the week.

Because of the reduction in sailing speed, today’s visit to Grand Cayman has been cancelled and the ship will proceed to its homeport of Tampa, where it is expected to arrive on Sunday as scheduled.

Guests on the current voyage will receive a $100.00 per person credit and a full refund on pre-purchased shore excursions for Grand Cayman.

In addition, guests will receive 50 per cent off a future Carnival cruise.

Carnival Legend is currently on the last leg of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that departed Tampa on Sunday, March 10th.

Dubai - home of the largest cruise complex in the Middle East

The countdown to the opening of the largest, newest, and most luxurious passenger terminal for cruise ships in the Middle East has begun.

As the leading tourist destination in the region, Dubai continues to dazzle worldwide visitors. To confirm its glowing reputation, global ports and marine terminal operator DP World is building a new terminal for cruise ship passengers at Mina Rashid. Located at the heart of the city and its vibrant creek, the port is a stone’s throw away from one of the world’s fastest-growing airports, Dubai International.

The new terminal is expected to be completed by the end of 2013 boosting Mina Rashid’s leading position in the cruise market and it will play an active role in the anticipated growth of cruise ship passengers to the emirate.

The complex covers an area of 27,000 square meters in addition to parking lots of up to 50,000 square meters. With its existing cruise ship terminal 1 and the new terminal 2, Mina Rashid will be able to receive five ocean-going cruise vessels simultaneously.

Owned by DP World and managed by Dubai Department of Tourism & Commerce Marketing, the Dubai Cruise Terminal offers state-of-the-art facilities, with efficient reception check-in, an information centre with concierge service, VIP lounge for visiting dignitaries, a relaxation zone and modern cafe.

The grand design is to develop Mina Rashid into a sophisticated, ultra-modern cruise terminal with the aim of turning it into a world class recreational area, reflecting Dubai’s strong cultural heritage and strengthening its position as the leading regional cruise hub. The development will also integrate the Mina Rashid waterfront back into the local community.

The project builds on a growing cruise business that has already dropped anchor in Dubai. Last year, Mina Rashid received five cruise ships and handled five ocean-going cruise vessels simultaneously for the first time ever. Dubai also received around 420,000 cruise tourists through 110 cruise ship visits and there are already four major international companies in situ that organise regular trips.

One of the flagships is Brilliance of the Seas of the Royal Caribbean fleet which has been coming to Dubai for the past three seasons. Mina Rashid also received the maiden voyage of the giant Serenade of the Seas in February this year, a sea-going palace that can accommodate 3,360 guests in its 1,073 suites distributed over 12 floors.

The commitment to the cruise passenger business underpins Dubai’s strategic goal of positioning itself as the region’s leading tourist destination. Alongside the wide variety of facilities and entertainment on these luxury floating resorts, passengers can enjoy the fantastic scenery in Dubai and the Arabian Gulf. The world-class hotels and resorts across the region and ultra-modern shopping centres are set against the background of a unique culture and heritage promising a lifetime of unforgettable memories.

CIRI Alaska Tourism Corporation announces new vessel

CATC has committed to the construction of a new, 150-passenger catamaran for KFT to add to its 12-vessel fleet, with delivery anticipated in early 2014. Designed by Teknicraft of New Zealand and constructed by All American Marine in Bellingham, Wash., the new vessel will join two sister ships, the Aialik and Orca Voyagers.

The ships’ design offers stability, spacious seating, wrap-around viewing decks, oversized, fog-free windows and LCD video monitors. A hydrofoil wing helps lift the catamaran up out of the water, decreasing drag, increasing fuel economy and creating a smaller boat wake.

“All of Kenai Fjords Tours’ vessels are custom-built for viewing Alaska wildlife and glaciers,” said Paul Landis, CATC president and chief operating officer. “We wanted to develop the optimum vessel combining an unparalleled viewing experience with passenger comfort.”

The investment in the KFT fleet comes just weeks before spring construction resumes on the rebuild of Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge on Fox Island. Being built by Seward-based Harmon Construction, the lodge will be completed and available for guests beginning June 1, 2013. The new, 3300-square-foot building boasts immense windows overlooking Resurrection Bay, a spacious dining area and lounge and a redesigned kitchen that will allow for a new culinary program.

“The Wilderness Lodge is a place for our overnight guests to gather, enjoy gourmet meals, and cozy up in the lounge with a good book and glass of fine wine,” said Cathy Martell, general manager of KFWL. “Guests will be able to enjoy gourmet Alaska cuisine and bring some of the ‘tips and tricks of the trade’ home to their own kitchens.”

CONTINUES BELOW

An evening guided sea kayak tour has been added to other lodge activities including national park ranger-led walks, naturalist presentations and guided daytime sea kayaking. Each stay at the lodge includes a wildlife cruise, which can be upgraded to a National Park Tour or Northwestern Fjord Tour.

Kenai Fjords Tours and Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge are subsidiaries of CIRI Alaska Tourism Corporation. Alaska Native owned and operated, CATC is the umbrella company for Alaska Heritage Tours, Kenai Fjords Tours, Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge, Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, and Seward Windsong Lodge.

Caribbean Cruise Line: Scam avoidance is necessary when traveling creatively

According to Caribbean Cruise Line, scam artists are prevalent throughout the travel industry, making it hard for any family to trust any offer that may be presented with to embark on a great vacation.

However, if one stays aware of how to remain secure and informed throughout travel, these instances can be avoided. A recent press statement quotes Caribbean Cruise Line, “Scams are fervent in this industry and others, but that does not mean families cannot travel safely. In fact, with the right opportunity they can pursue vacations creatively and on a budget.”

In terms of creative vacationing, a recent Huffington Post article highlights that many Americans are forgoing typical New Year’s resolutions to lose weight or quit smoking, and are instead opting to attempt to travel more. The article encourages a creative approach to travel, urging the adventurous to take a closer look at what hidden opportunities lie in every destination. It states, “No matter your locale, there are countless museums, unusual stores, neighborhood restaurants and parks and most importantly, people that can enrich your local journey!” The article offers three tips to make travel more creative and more approachable: travel within one’s own hometown, make a themed vacation or rely on unique modes of transportation.

As for the latter suggestion, Caribbean Cruise Line indicates that cruises can prove one of the most unique forms of transportation that enables passengers to get incredibly close to the beauty of the open sea and countless tropical islands. However, this travel company notes that traveling creatively does come with some risk. According to Caribbean Cruise Line, scams are best avoided if families carefully plan their approach and go through verified travel companies to arrange for every step of the journey.

In order to provide an example of how arranged, yet fun travel can be free of risks of scam, Caribbean Cruise Line details one of its opportunities, “Our Bahamas Celebration Cruise Ship offers the perfect family vacation, and Grand Bahama Island is the perfect family destination. Our fun-filled cruise ship offers three Kid’s Clubs to cater to each age group, as well as our Pirates of the Caribbean Water Park for the little tikes. On shore, adults can have the time of their lives swimming, snorkeling, fishing, parasailing and horseback riding.”

While the company understands that today’s public is often more skeptical of optimal travel deals, it continues to take action against illegitimate actions in the industry through its Caribbean Cruise Line Scam Watch.

Caribbean Cruise Line, scam prevention advocate, strives to deliver affordable, high-quality vacation experiences for eager American travelers. Top-notch destinations, relaxing accommodations, fun activities and beautiful sights are all things experienced by customers of Caribbean Cruise Line. Scams in the travel industry, however, have prevented many travelers from pursuing cruise vacations. As such, the Caribbean Cruise Line Scam Watch strives to create a safer, more enjoyable and secure travel experience for its passengers who embark to locations such as the Grand Lucayan Resort in the Bahamas.

CLIA backs global effort to facilitate shore leave for crewmembers

These efforts are being made through a request that port States make provisions for crewmembers to be able to apply for visas upon arrival in port or very shortly before arrival if the port State requires a visa for shore leave.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) today announced its support of efforts being led by the International Shipping Federation (ISF) to facilitate shore leave for seafarers. These efforts are being made through a request that port States make provisions for crewmembers to be able to apply for visas upon arrival in port or very shortly before arrival if the port State requires a visa for shore leave.

CLIA supports ISF’s proposal made in a submission to the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Facilitation Committee, which meets in April to consider its current review of the IMO Convention on the Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL). The FAL Convention includes a blanket prohibition on port states requiring seafarers to obtain visas in order to enjoy shore leave.
