Azamara ship's power restored after fire

By Donna TunneyEngineers onboard Azamara Club Cruises’ Azamara Quest restored propulsion power to the ship, which was on its way to Sandakan, Malaysia. The ship was expected to arrive sometime on Sunday.

The 694-passenger ship was temporarily adrift some 200 miles off the coast of Borneo following an engine room fire on March 30.

The ship was operating a 17-day cruise that departed Hong Kong on March 26. The voyage was to conclude in Singapore on April 12, but Azamara said that damage from the fire would cause the remainder of the cruise to be canceled.

Five crew members were injured in the blaze, one seriously.

Passengers spent several hours on the ship without air conditioning, plumbing or refrigerated food. One engine had been repaired earlier, and those services were restored on March 31.

Azamara President and CEO Larry Pimentel was traveling to Sandakan and planned to be there in time to greet passengers when the ship arrived. The line is assisting with onward travel arrangements.

Azamara said it would provide all guests with a full refund for their cruise. Also, it will give each guest a future cruise certificate for 100% of the cruise fare paid for their sailing.
